Questions We Get Asked a Lot

We’re a pet-friendly resort and absolutely love hosting your furry companions. However, to maintain a comfortable environment for all guests, pets aren’t allowed in the rooms or the restaurant area. We encourage you to explore our expansive grounds with your pet, provided they don’t disturb other guests. Importantly, guests will be financially responsible for any damages caused by their pets.

Of course, we love being a part of your special moments. From intimate birthday gatherings and workplace functions to elaborate destination weddings, our versatile spaces can be tailored to meet your needs. To discuss the specifics and to tailor your event, simply reach out to our team via email or whatsapp.

Absolutely, our Wi-Fi is designed to keep up with the demands of modern life, making the resort ideal for digital nomads who need a strong and reliable connection to stay productive. However, do note that we occasionally experience power outages in the town, which can temporarily affect internet connectivity. Although inconvenient, these moments offer an opportunity to unplug and immerse yourself in activities like swimming, snorkelling, and surfing.

We’re deeply committed to sustainability. This commitment is reflected in small day-to-day practices like encouraging guests to reuse towels and bigger initiatives like our regular turtle release programme. We also grow and source our food locally to support our community and reduce our carbon footprint.

We offer a range of room options to cater to different tastes and needs. Whether you’re searching for romance in our Luxury Lodge, or want to immerse yourself in nature in one of our huts, there’s a perfect space for you. And for families, our two-bedroom cabin offers both space and comfort.

Indeed, Sumbawa has its own unique charm. Though we offer essentials like towels and toiletries, an electrical adapter is advisable if you have gadgets with foreign plugs. Personal items, such as prescription medications, specific skincare products, and sunscreen, should also be packed.

Our check-in time is from 3 p.m., giving our housekeeping team ample time to prepare your room to perfection. As for check-out, it’s by 11 a.m., which allows you the morning to soak in a bit more of Kirana Retreat before you depart. If you would like to have a late check out, please talk to reception.

While we can’t guarantee specific rooms, we certainly try our best to accommodate your requests. If a room with a view is important to you, we recommend contacting us in advance to discuss your options.

One of the best parts of staying at Kirana Retreat is our private bay. Imagine stepping out of your room and being just moments away from pristine white sands. It’s the ideal backdrop for swimming, diving, and snorkeling, or simply unwinding on a hanging daybed.

While meals aren’t automatically included in your room rate, you have the option to add breakfast at the time of booking. If you decide later that you’d like to add breakfast to your room, our friendly staff can easily add that to your package once you’ve arrived.

Room service is available and designed to cater to your cravings. On weekdays, we operate from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., extending to 9 p.m. on weekends. Our menu features a mix of international and local favourites, tailored to suit various dietary requirements.

Note: Last orders are 30 minutes before kitchen closes.

Your comfort is our priority, that’s why our housekeeping cleans your room daily. However, if you have special requests like extra pillows or need an unexpected tidy-up, you can message room service for assistance.

Yes, a quick 24-hour laundry service is offered for your convenience. Each room has a laundry bag and a list where you can jot down your laundry items, ensuring everything is accounted for when returned.

We have a mix of international and standard Indonesian plugs in our rooms. However, an adapter is still a good idea to ensure all your devices can be charged without a hitch.

Indeed, we provide plush bath towels along with a handpicked selection of organic toiletries from Sensatia to make your stay more comfortable. However, it’s important to note that these bath towels are intended solely for use within your accommodation. To keep them sand-free and clean, we kindly request that you don’t take them to the beach. Should you require a beach towel, simply visit our reception, and they’ll be more than happy to provide one for you.

Note: As part of our efforts to be sustainable, we don’t provide disposable shower caps, toothbrushes, cotton tips, or sanitary bags.

Hairdryers are not a standard feature in all rooms. However, if you find yourself in need of one, feel free to request it from our room service. We can promptly have it sent to your room to ensure you have all the amenities you require for a comfortable stay.

Because Kirana Retreat is nestled within a natural environment, encountering some form of wildlife is not out of the ordinary. You may come across harmless insects, geckos, and even monkeys. These creatures are a part of the area’s natural ecosystem. If you find their presence unsettling or require assistance with them, our housekeeping team is on standby to help you resolve the situation. It’s also worth noting that we don’t have many mosquitoes here and Sumbawa is free from malaria.

Our cancellation and refund policy is detailed on this page, but if you have any additional questions about it, please feel free to get in touch with us.

Absolutely. Once you’re here, just pop over to our front reception, and we’ll help you link up with a trusted local surf guide who knows these breaks like the back of their hand.

While the beauty of Sumbawa’s waves is undeniable, they tend to cater more to intermediate and experienced surfers. We don’t have beginner-friendly breaks in the immediate vicinity. However, if you’re keen to learn, we can connect you with surf guides familiar with the area who can provide advice and training.

Each break offers a unique allure, and here’s a concise rundown of what to expect and how far each is from the retreat:

  • Scar Reef: Located roughly an hour north, Scar Reef is for goofy footers looking to master the art of the backdoor entry on this hollow reef break. Renowned for its fast pace and shallow reefs, it’s best suited for experienced surfers, especially on days with swells above 5 feet but below 12 with gentle winds.
  • Super Suck: A 25-minute scooter ride will get you to Super Suck. As the name suggests, it’s a dramatically hollow wave that forms a tight barrel over a shallow reef. While it’s breathtaking and exhilarating, it also demands respect. Surfing here is like experiencing the Skeleton Bay of Indo, albeit slightly more forgiving.
  • Tropical: Approximately 8 minutes by scooter from Kirana, Tropical awaits with its mellow vibe. Predominantly a left-hander, it shines during medium-sized SW swells in the dry season. Though occasionally inconsistent, when conditions are right, the ride is long and thrilling.
  • Yo-Yos: Just a 10-minute walk away, Yo-Yos is a duo of compelling breaks. The Wedge provides a quick rebound wave, leading surfers into an exciting right shoulder. The Hook, on the other hand, is a rising wave over the reefs that results in a semi-hollow right. Both spots are most enjoyable on shoulder- to head-high swells with favourable winds.

One of the best things about Sumbawa is the relatively uncrowded nature of our waves. Many surfers who visit are pleasantly surprised by the tranquillity they find, allowing for a more serene and personal surf experience.

Besides the general surfing guidelines, it’s important to be aware of the shallow reefs, especially at breaks like Super Suck and Scar Reef. It’s always a good practice to surf within your limits, observe the conditions before paddling out, and when in doubt, consult with local surfers or guides. We also recommend reef booties for foot protection against sharp corals.

Sumbawa enjoys warm tropical waters year-round. Most surfers find boardshorts or a bikini comfortable. However, if you plan on extended sessions, you might consider a light wetsuit top or rash guard to prevent sunburn and chafing.

The prime surfing season in Sumbawa runs from April to October during the dry season. This period sees the most consistent swells, especially from the SW channel. However, it’s always wise to check daily conditions or consult with our local guides, as ocean currents, tides, and winds can fluctuate. Yo-Yos is famous for its consistency all year round.

Of course! While there are some places to rent boards, many surfers prefer the familiarity of their own. If you’re flying, consider choosing airlines like Citilink, known for being surfboard-friendly.

There are a few local surf shops around, offering basic supplies and accessories. For extensive board repairs, it’s best to enquire at our front reception, and we’ll guide you to the nearest reliable service.

Absolutely, you can book a range of exciting tours directly with us. From whale shark expeditions to spearfishing and diving tours, our local guides are experts at offering an authentic Sumbawan experience. Horse riding on the beach is another popular option, providing a fantastic adventure for couples.

Yes, indeed. Our cooking classes are a family-friendly affair where our local chef guides you on how to create traditional dishes. It’s not just a great cultural immersion, but you’ll also leave with recipes you can easily recreate at home.

Sumbawa is teeming with unique wildlife, both on land and in the sea. During our whale shark tours, for instance, you’ll come up close with these gentle giants of the ocean. Other marine life, like colourful coral, sea turtles, and a variety of fish can be spotted while out snorkelling and diving.

Indeed, Sumbawa boasts a wealth of natural beauty. Think stunning waterfalls and white sandy beaches, perfect for a day trip. Our staff are well-versed in local gems, so don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations.

We have local clinics in Sekongkang and Maluk for basic healthcare needs, and over-the-counter medications are available there. We also have an on-site nurse for emergencies. Rest assured, you’re in safe hands.

Just a quick five-minute journey from the retreat, you’ll find our local fruit shop. Once you hit the main road, turn right and go past the bridge; they’re right there.

Sanitary pads are available at local convenience stores like Alfamart or Indomart. However, please note that tampons are generally not sold due to the region’s Muslim culture.

While our own restaurant has garnered high praise, we understand the allure of variety. There are a few local restaurants in nearby towns worth checking out, and a Japanese fusion restaurant called Sapphire is only a five-minute scooter ride away.

While we don’t have a swimming pool at the moment, our private bay provides an idyllic setting for swimming and snorkelling. As for working out, our outdoor calisthenics gym offers you the chance to maintain your fitness routine surrounded by nature.

Apart from surfing, there’s a diverse array of activities for you to dive into. If you’re a fan of watersports, snorkelling in our private bay is a must, where you can discover vibrant marine life. Kayaking and paddle boarding are also available, offering a different perspective of our stunning coastline. For those who prefer land-based activities, you can rent a scooter to explore Sumbawa or try your hand at volleyball with other guests. Interested in wellness? Rent a yoga mat and do some private yoga on your deck. Additionally, our cooking classes are a fantastic, family-friendly opportunity to learn about the local foods of Indonesia. And for those who are looking for something a little different, consider embarking on a spearfishing, whale shark, or diving tour with local guides or trekking to our nearby waterfalls to further immerse yourself in the natural beauty around us.

Our spa is still being built. However, you can book an in-room massage with options ranging from a 60 to 90-minute deep traditional, gentle relaxation, or focused massage. Rest assured, our skilled masseuse will cater to your specific needs.

Yes, all activities and equipment rentals will be conveniently added to your bill, making it hassle-free for you.

Although we don’t have a designated play area, our expansive grounds and beach offer plenty of space for young ones to roam free. Most of our activities are child-friendly, and they can also interact with our friendly bunnies and guinea pigs whilst under your supervision.

Unfortunately, due to the hilly terrain and multiple stairs, our resort is not fully accessible for guests with mobility issues. However, our restaurant is wheelchair-accessible.

Yes, we offer special dinners ranging from romantic beachside meals to seafood BBQs. On weekends, we host a pasta and pizza night on Saturday and a tapas and BBQ night on Sunday. Both events feature DJ music and a beach bonfire.

Our Wi-Fi is robust, catering to the demands of even the most connected guest. In case of local power outages, our generator ensures a consistent experience. These outages also offer a unique opportunity to unplug and explore the surrounding beauty.

Yes, we collaborate with the local community for our regular turtle release as part of our Save the Turtle initiative. This offers an educational and hands-on experience for guests interested in conservation. You can donate, name and release your very own turtle. We normally do turtle releases every couple of weeks.

You can enjoy our culinary offerings at the restaurant from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Just a note that the kitchen closes a bit earlier—8:30 p.m. on weekdays and 9:00 p.m. on weekends.

Expect a fusion of local and international flavours on our menu. We offer everything from vibrant salads and poke bowls to authentic Indonesian curries. We’ve also got pizzas, pastas, and burgers too with vegan cheese made in-house. We pride ourselves on being voted some of the best food in Sumbawa, and we’re a hit with plant-based eaters!

Absolutely. If you have specific dietary needs, please let our staff know. We strive to modify dishes to suit your requirements.

We’re all about comfort and relaxation. While we don’t enforce a strict dress code, we do ask that you wash and dry off before entering the dining area.

Yes, our on-site bar offers a range of beverages. Perfect for a pre-dinner, sunset drink or a relaxing after-meal cocktail. We also have homemade kombucha and ginger ale so make sure to ask!

Reservations are generally not needed unless you’re a party of more than four. For larger groups, it’s a good idea to book ahead to ensure we can accommodate everyone comfortably.

We take ingredient sourcing seriously. Most of our fresh produce comes from our own hydroponic and aquaponic greenhouse, supplemented by local farms and markets. This approach supports our community while minimising our carbon footprint. Additionally, we dont use vegetable oil in our cooking, we use coconut oil instead. It’s not only a healthier choice but also a more sustainable one.

Certainly. If you fancy a private dinner, perhaps on the beach, please let our reception know. We offer bespoke experiences like romantic dinners or seafood BBQs by the sea.

Yes, we offer room service between 7:20 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. When you check in, you’ll receive a WhatsApp contact to place your orders. The kitchen closes at 8:30 p.m. on weekdays and 9:00 p.m. on weekends.

If you’d like to explore, Sapphire Restaurant is just a 3-minute scooter ride away. They offer Japanese fusion cuisine and front-row seats to Yoyos surf break. You can also find local warungs in town, but we’d advise being cautious about food freshness, as food poisoning can be an issue.

For events and larger reservations like birthdays or weddings, you can either give us a call or send a WhatsApp message in advance to make arrangements.

Yes, we offer a family-friendly environment and a variety of menu options that kids will love.

Yes, you can choose from a variety of seating arrangements to match your mood—whether that’s inside or outside under the stars.

Regrettably, public transport isn’t an option in West Sumbawa. However, we do collaborate with an external company that offers drivers and cars, which you can book for the duration of your stay. For a more independent experience, you could also rent one of our Yamaha Nmax scooters.

While we don’t offer group or shared transport to popular sites, you can opt to use our Kirana car service for travel between Kirana Retreat and Kini Resort. If you’re partaking in an activity with other guests, shared transport could become a likelihood.

Yes, besides collaborating with an external company for car hires, we offer daily scooter rentals. Our scooters are Yamaha Nmax models, which are known for their sturdiness and reliability.

Typically, a valid driving licence from your home country will suffice for renting a vehicle in Indonesia. There’s usually no need for an international driving permit, although carrying one won’t hurt.

You most likely won’t need a local driving permit. However, our reception staff are more than willing to provide information and assistance should the need arise.

Whilst road rules exist in Indonesia, many locals choose not to follow them. Be particularly cautious while driving. In the unfortunate event of an accident, the local party involved may expect you to cover the damages, regardless of fault.

Yes, we do have on-site parking facilities. Additionally, our 24/7 security service ensures that your car or scooter remains safe throughout your stay.

If travelling by plane, expect a total journey time of around 5 hours from Bali to Sumbawa, then to the resort. Alternatively, a boat journey takes about 3 hours. Plan ahead for limited restroom facilities and bring snacks for the car journey, especially if travelling with children.

Whether you’re travelling by plane, boat, or car, motion sickness can be an issue. Consider packing anti-nausea pills for your journey.

Aim to be at the airport at least 2 hours before your domestic flight is scheduled to depart. Online check-in is available 12 hours prior to departure and usually closes 2 hours before the flight.
